SUSANNA AND EVANS Y. LAM PROFESSORSHIP
Evans Lam ’83, ’84S (MBA) came to the United States more than 30
years ago with $180, a one-way plane ticket, and a scholarship to the
University of Rochester.
It was the frst time he stepped foot outside of his native Hong Kong.
“I thought the University was in Manhattan,” he recalls with a laugh.
Though he had to quickly bone up on his geography, his skill in
mathematics was razor sharp.
“It wasn’t until I got to Rochester that I realized how strong I was
at math,” Lam notes. “My professors inspired and enlightened me.
They were the best. My education was second to none.”
Lam, senior vice president of wealth management and senior
portfolio manager at UBS Financial Services, and his wife, Susanna,
a CPA, and an accomplished Chinese opera singer and performer,
have used their philanthropy to say “thank you.”
They established a professorship to attract global business scholars
to the Simon faculty; the frst holder will be named in 2015. They
also are funding a scholarship for top-performing Hong Kong
students to attend Rochester.
“The University enabled me to fulfll the American dream,” says
Lam, a University of Rochester trustee. “Giving back is part of this
dream and what makes America great.”
