                                                 LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY

                                                                                    Technology is playing an ever-increasing and vital role in today’s health care environment, both in
                                                                                    how we practice and in how we learn. We must integrate technology into new and existing programs,
                                                                                    determine how to best incorporate technology into how we teach, and give our students the best
                                                                                    environment to learn, especially within teams. Our Center for Experiential Learning and its new
                                                                                    simulation center (see story in this publication) will be a focal point for training and technology. To
                                                                                    enhance learning through technology, there are plenty of places for students to plug in their laptops
                                                                                    and iPads™. Rooms are fully wired with conferencing capability and cameras allow students to record
                                                                                    team exercises or virtual simulations, providing an excellent feedback mechanism. Our faculty must
                                                                                    also become technologically savvy themselves and are updating their teaching toolbox to incorporate
                                                                                    iBooks™, digital micrographs, virtual patient simulation, and videos into their lessons. “Flipping
                                                                                    classrooms” is also becoming more prevalent. Instead of lectures, students learn new material outside
                                                                                    the classroom—such as online or by video—and the classroom is dedicated to more active and
                                                                                    personalized interaction with faculty and peers.

                                                   EHR AND PATIENT- AND FAMILY-CENTERED CARE

                                                                                    The Electronic Health Record (EHR) is dramatically changing how health care providers
                                                                                    communicate, interact, and partner with patients and families, as well as each other. However, there
                                                                                    are significant concerns as to how health care professionals can best utilize the EHR in a manner that
                                                                                    is patient friendly and doesn’t distance them from the patient. The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation has
                                                                                    selected Sarah Peyre, Ed.D., assistant dean for Interprofessional Education, as a Macy Faculty Scholar.
                                                                                    The Foundation’s support will help accelerate Dr. Peyre’s work to identify, develop, and implement
                                                                                    best practices for integrating EHR into patient- and family-centered care at UR Medicine. She will
                                                                                    also create and pilot a Medical Center-wide curriculum—including online learning, simulation, and
                                                                                    team-based learning—to train students and clinicians in best practices for EHR use. The curriculum
                                                                                    could serve as a national model for how to ensure that EHR enhances the partnership between
                                                                                    patients and health care professionals.
