A Message from CEO/Dean Taubman and VP/Dean Rideout

Today’s rapid, dramatic changes in health care and technology are redefining what physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals do every day. This constant
change creates a pressing need for our students, faculty, and staff across the University of Rochester Medical Center to learn new skills and how to work together to
enhance collaborative care.

Excellence in education is the foundation for excellence in health care. Our Institute for Innovative Education builds on our unique structure as an integrated academic
medical center. The School of Medicine and Dentistry has a long history of innovative educational excellence and in developing new approaches to health care delivery. We
teach students to take into account the psychological, interpersonal, and societal influences in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, never forgetting the humanism and
compassion that have been the cornerstones of our biopsychosocial model. The School of Nursing was the first to develop and implement the unification model, integrating
education, research, and practice and connecting the classroom and laboratory to real-world experience. The school’s national recognition is also grounded in its history as
the place where the primary care nurse practitioner model was cultivated.

The Institute will oversee a system-wide transformation of the Medical Center’s educational priorities and programs. It will identify and develop common programs and
curricula for medical, nursing and dental students; residents; fellows; faculty; physicians; nurses; and hospital staff. We will develop interprofessional curricula and provide
state-of-the-art simulation, emerging technologies and other tools, expertise, and services to educate our future health care professionals. Hospitals and medical centers
must employ professionals who are comfortable collaborating with each other and working in teams, using the latest technology and evidence-based practices, and who
are committed to focusing on quality, safety, and patient- and family-centered care. Studies show patients receive better care and recover more quickly when treated by a
successfully integrated team of providers. That makes interprofessional education more critical than ever.

We will ensure that the entire Medical Center keeps pace with education and technology in various ways. We will develop mechanisms for teaching technology—and
not just to students. For example, if the Medical Center were to replace stethoscopes with handheld, portable ultrasounds, then physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and
others all would have to learn how to use the device. Our commitment to simulation training—a critical component in educating health professionals—will continue and
be enhanced with our new simulation center.

With your support, we can shape the future and create the next generation of health care leaders. We will lead the nation in team-oriented education that supports health
care needs and is proven to improve patient outcomes.

Best Regards,
