Simulation Training Critical to Educating Health Professionals

When the Center for Experiential Learning opened in 2013, it quickly became a crucial resource to improve the way health care professionals are taught
throughout their careers, and to support educational innovation for the entire Medical Center. We are now expanding and enhancing our facility. One
crucial area is simulation training. Simulation uses standardized patients, computer-based training, and computer-enhanced patient mannequins that mimic
human medical conditions and can blink, bleed and be programmed to go into cardiac distress. Standardized patients are carefully trained to recreate patient
experiences in a clinical setting. They allow medical students to practice effective communication and examination techniques with real people in a safe
learning environment.

When the facility is completed, it will include flexible teaching classrooms, high-fidelity simulation rooms, areas for study and informal learning, observation
areas, a surgical simulation lab, and a surgical skills classroom. It will also enhance the training of health care teams who provide collaborative care to patients.
The facility will also be a community resource to help individuals learn what to expect during a visit with their physician or how to work effectively with a
health care team during a hospital stay.
