Early in its history, the Simon School’s faculty conducted

groundbreaking research in critical areas that led it to be
recognized as a major contributor to the world of business. Five

decades later, the recruitment of talented faculty members
remains a key to Simon’s growth and success.

The School’s frst endowed professorship was made possible

by a bequest from late University of Rochester Trustee Fred
H. Gowen ’32. In his will, Gowen directed that approximately
$800,000 be used “to endow a professorship or professorships

in the social sciences, preferably in the felds of economics,

business and/or business history.”
Late University benefactor and
Trustee (1968–1978) Fred Gowen ’32 Upon Gowen’s death in 1979, the University created the Fred

H. Gowen Professorship. This position once held by Charles I.
Plosser (1989–1992), former Simon Dean and President of the

Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, is now held by Jerold B.
Warner, professor of fnance.

The Fred H. Gowen Professorship is an example of the enduring
connections that exist between generations of Simon faculty,

alumni, and students.

“Just as great cathedrals are built brick by brick, great
universities are built professorship by professorship.”
