Diversity Initiative: The Time is Now

Friends,

Since its earliest years, the University of Rochester has been at

the forefront of diversity issues. Te work of Frederick Douglass
and Susan B. Anthony is well etched in Rochesters history.
Student organizations such as the Black Students Union, Pride
Network, and Spanish and Latino Students Association have been

agents for change on campus and in the local community.

In todays world, the need for diverse perspectives and backgrounds
is more critical than ever. At the University, President Joel Seligman
and the Board of Trustees are committed to providing opportunities
Lance Drummond 85s (MBA)
Member, Board of Trustees for students and faculty to learn and teach together, to addressing
critical issues facing society today, and to reaching out to
underrepresented communities. I hope you will join us, along with

alumni, parents, and friends, to support a range of initiatives
designed to make our world ever better.

As a part of Te Meliora Challenge, diversity plays a critical role.
We have identifed three areas most in need:

• Providing scholarship and fellowship support so that the best
and brightest students can attend Rochester.

• Attracting a diverse faculty who can teach those students about
the complex world we live in from a variety of perspectives.
• Promoting a climate of inclusiveness on campus that supports
our students, faculty, and staf.

We cannot do it alone. I hope you will take a moment to review
the stories highlighting the people and programs making a diference
today and join us in improving diversity at the University of Rochester.
