robert rose ’90M (MS), ’94M (PhD), professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine, infectious Diseases, sought a career in
biomedical research so he could improve public health. his work has paid of in a big way. Dr. rose, and his colleagues
Drs. william Bonnez (right) and richard reichman (left), contributed to the development of two vaccines that protect
against diseases caused by multiple strains of human papillomavirus (hPV), including those that are known to cause
uterine cervical cancer and other malignancies. The distribution of these vaccines throughout the world represents a major
public health achievement.

“i was well-prepared to engage in team science thanks to my graduate education. The School of Medicine and Dentistry
provided world-class faculty, a nurturing environment, and opportunities to collaborate with other researchers to solve
complex health problems,” he said. “The School’s eforts to foster close collaborative relationships between basic scientists
and clinicians have created an outstanding environment for translational research, lessening the time between discovery
and the practical beneft to public health.”
