laura Calvi, M.D., believes one of the
most important missions of an academic
institution is to teach and train the next
generation of doctors and researchers.
Dr. Calvi’s teaching encompasses almost
the entire academic “pipeline”—from
medical, graduate, and M.D./Ph.D.
students to residents and fellows.

Dr. Calvi, associate professor of medicine,
endocrinology/metabolism and neurosurgery,
is recognized for her novel cancer and stem
cell micro-environment research. She was
recently inducted into the American Society
for Clinical investigation, one of the nation’s
oldest and most respected medical
honor societies.

whether it’s in the classroom or lab,
Dr. Calvi enjoys teaching a diverse student
body how to care for patients or engage
in the process of discovery.

the education of our students goes beyond undergraduate training.

as a leading research institution, we are teaching the next generation of scientists who have the knowledge and skills to make
the breakthrough discoveries that prevent or cure illnesses and impact lives around the world. our scientists must continue
to provide better and more cost-efective approaches to treat chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes,
and arthritis.

our graduate students—ph.d. and M.d./ph.d.—are some of the most sought-after professionals in academic medicine
and industry. students in the M.d./ph.d. program can take cutting-edge research from laboratories directly to patients,
and then take what they learn from patients back to laboratories to develop preventions and cures.

students learn and train in an environment where scientists have a legacy of innovative discoveries including: the
haemophilus infuenza b (hib) vaccine which eradicated a leading cause of meningitis in small children; the development of
lung surfactant to improve dramatically the survival rate of premature infants; and the contribution of crucial technology
to develop the world’s frst cancer vaccine.

in the past, graduate students have received a large portion of their fnancial support from federal training grants as well as the
school. Unfortunately, a reduction in grants has created a need for further assistance from the school. your support will help
our graduates lead the future of health care, discovery, and innovation.
