Leadership comes easy when you have an incredible group of people next to you
and a phenomenal coaching staf supporting you, says Katie Flaschner 14, captain
of Rochester s feld hockey team and known to her friends, family, and teammates
as Flash. In 2012, the team made history: it started the season with eight wins, made
the Liberty League Championships, and went to the NCAA National Championship
Tournament for the frst time ever.
Although we didnt win in the end, we wont be remembered as the one Rochester
team that didn t make the Final Four, Katie says. Instead, we are going to be
remembered as the Rochester team that made the Elite Eight in our frst post-season
run. The support from our fellow students was incredible, and it was inspiring how the
entire community got behind us.
Katie took the helm at the end of her sophomore year. Throughout pre-season training
and during the season itself, she continually embraced and celebrated the entire
team s passion and focus.
Field hockey wasn t Katie s frst sport. She grew up playing ice hockey and even went
to a private high school in Bufalo, N.Y., for it. But in her junior year, feld hockey called
to her and she knew she wanted to play it in college. She was later recruited to play at
Rochester.
With a major in political science and a minor in psychology, Katie also hopes to design
a second major in flm and media studies. In the spring of 2013, she will study abroad in
Buenos Aires, Argentina, where feld hockey happens to be very popular.
Rochester has shaped who I am. I m proud
to have contributed to the legacy that is
Rochester Athletics and that our team has
set a new precedent for feld hockey here.
